Police release video recording of violent attack during manhunt

Police have released surveillance images of a man they hope to track down after another man was brutally attacked and robbed on the street in Leeds.

The 53-year-old victim was repeatedly punched in the face and had his belongings stolen while he was waiting for a taxi on Merrion Street at around 04:30am (CEST) on 30 June.

The suspect hung around near the man before returning and stealing his phone, wallet, watch and leather jacket, police said.

Det Insp Vicky Vessey said the attack showed a “sickening level of violence”.

Officers believe the suspect may have also attacked and robbed other people in the area, including a 39-year-old man who suffered facial injuries when he was struck from behind on Fish Street around 4:45 a.m. Monday.

A 19-year-old man was knocked unconscious when he was attacked by one of the two suspects in St. Alban’s Place at around 1.30am on Sunday.

Later that same morning, a 47-year-old man was attacked and robbed in Regent Street by two men. The two men were described as being between 18 and 20 years old and possibly Kurdish or Romanian.

The official said: “We are currently unsure if these incidents are related, but they follow a similar pattern in terms of circumstances where individual male victims were targeted during nighttime outings.”

“The video footage of the incident in Merrion Street is truly horrific and shows in a graphic way the abhorrent level of violence used by the perpetrator.”

Anyone who recognizes the suspect or has useful information is asked to come forward.
