Heat and air quality warning for record temperatures

As temperatures continue to rise to record-breaking triple digits in parts of Riverside County, heat advisories will remain in effect in some areas through at least Thursday, National Weather Service meteorologists said Sunday.

The warning until at least 9 p.m. Thursday includes the Coachella Valley as well as the Apple and Lucerne Valleys and the San Gorgonio Pass near Banning.

Another warning remains in effect until at least 9 p.m. Sunday for the mountains and valleys of Riverside County and the Inland Empire.

The high temperature on Sunday should be 116 in Coachella and 118 in Indio and Palm Desert.

Record temperatures in Big Bear and Borrego on Saturday

On Saturday, Palm Springs reached 46 degrees, a day after the city set a new record of 50 degrees. While the city did not set a daily record on Saturday, several surrounding towns did:

Big Bear set a daily record of 92 degrees on Saturday, tying a daily record set in 1985.
Borrego set a new record of 118 degrees, beating the previous daily record of 115 degrees set in 2017.

From the coastal valleys to the mountains, temperatures could drop by one to two degrees by Monday afternoon, the NWS said.

Meteorologists advised residents to spend as little time outdoors as possible, drink plenty of fluids and check on people who are sensitive to the heat.

Authorities have reminded the public never to leave pets or children in cars on days when it is even slightly warmer than normal, as locked cars can turn into death traps in a matter of minutes.
