Among the Pune family members swept away in Lonavala were newlyweds who were later rescued | Pune News

A newlywed couple were among the family members who were on a picnic and were washed away by a waterfall behind the Bhushi dam in Lonavala near Pune on Sunday. Four of them, including three children, died but the couple were rescued and are currently in hospital, a local resident who knows the family, who live in Sayyad Nagar area of ​​Pune’s Hadapsar, said on Monday.

According to police, the members of the extended family of the Ansaris, Khans and Sayyads, including the couple, were heading to Lonavala for a picnic in a hired bus early on Sunday. They said as many as 19 members of the family were on their way to a picnic at the popular tourist destination when the accident occurred on Sunday afternoon.

Farooq Inamdar, a former municipal councillor from Hadapsar area who went to the accident site after receiving information about the accident, said the 19 members were part of the extended family living in Sayyad Nagar. Inamdar said a relative who had travelled from Uttar Pradesh for the family’s wedding was also part of the group that had travelled to Lonavala.

“I have learnt that the couple from Sayyad Nagar, who got married on June 22, were also travelling and were injured in the accident, but their condition is stable. Shahista Ansari, who died in the accident, was working as a domestic help. The parents of the children who lost their lives run a small shop selling bakery items…” he added.

A purported video showing a group of people, including those who lost their lives in Lonavala on Sunday, being swept away by floodwaters following heavy rains in the region is being widely shared on social media.

The Pune Rural Police, INS Shivaji and members of the Shivdurg Mitra Mandal conducted a rescue operation during which the bodies of three victims – identified as Ameena Salman alias Adil Ansari, 13, her sister Umera Salman alias Adil Ansari, 8, and Shahista Ansari, 37 – were recovered on Sunday.

When the search operation resumed on Monday morning, the body of 9-year-old Mariya Akil Sayyad was found and police said they were looking for 4-year-old Adnan Sabhahat Ansari, who was swept away.
