NEW YORK (PIX11) – The family of a teenager who died in a tragic car accident on the last day of school in Queens on Wednesday has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help with immediate costs.

The teenager, identified as 16-year-old Jael Zhinin, was out with her 8-year-old sister when a truck driver attempted to turn left onto 46th Street on 47th Avenue when the light was green and then struck the two girls who were crossing the street, police said.

The eldest sister, Jael, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her younger sister, Leslie, was taken to a local hospital where she remains in critical condition, according to authorities.

“Your contribution will directly assist Jael’s family with funeral expenses and support Leslie’s ongoing medical care and recovery,” the GoFundMe campaign states. “Together, we can provide critical support and comfort to Jael’s family as they process this heartbreaking loss and support Leslie on her path to healing. Thank you for your compassion, generosity and solidarity during this difficult time.”

Police said the driver, a man whose identity has not yet been established, was arrested on Wednesday and released on Thursday.

So far, more than 200 people have donated to the GoFundMe campaign.
