Man who threatened police with knife in Chino shot dead, police said – Daily Bulletin

Chino police shot and killed a man who allegedly attacked an officer with a knife while responding to a domestic violence call.

The altercation occurred last Thursday, June 20, around 10:15 p.m. in front of an apartment building in the 12800 block of 10th Street, Chino police said.

Officers responding to the call were directed to a 43-year-old Chino resident, Jose Angel Mendoza.

“Mendoza brandished the knife and refused to comply with the officer’s commands,” a police press release said. “Mendoza then approached the officer with the knife raised and an officer-involved shootout ensued.”

Local resident Renee Sundberg told KNN News, a freelance news organization that sometimes partners with the Southern California News Group, that she heard one gunshot, then three more, then saw police officers treating Mendoza while he was on the ground.

“It didn’t look good for the guy,” Sandberg said.

Mendoza died in the hospital. Sergeant Frank Acuna, a Chino police spokesman, said police had no prior contact with Mendoza.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting and asks anyone with information about the case to call 909-890-4904.
