AIADMK members suspended from Tamil Nadu Assembly

What’s the matter

Members of the opposition AIADMK party were suspended from the Tamil Nadu state assembly for one day on Tuesday.

The suspension came after they attempted to raise the issue of the Kallakurichi liquor tragedy during Question Hour, causing chaos in Parliament.

Following these disturbances, Speaker M. Appavu ordered their evacuation.

Prime Minister accuses AIADMK of deliberate disruption

Chief Minister and DMK chairman MK Stalin accused the AIADMK MPs of deliberately creating unrest in the assembly.

“They should have stayed with the discussion. They deliberately wanted to create chaos,” he explained.

Despite his request to have them present at the discussions on Kallakurichi, disruptions continued, forcing Speaker Appavu to expel them from the assembly.

Stalin attributes disruptions to recent political developments

Stalin attributed the disruption of the assembly to recent political events, particularly the overwhelming victory of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance in the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu.

“Our victory in the Lok Sabha elections has hit the AIADMK hard. They are engaging in these activities (disrupting Parliament sessions) to make people forget our victory,” he said.

The INDIA bloc won all 39 parliamentary seats in Tamil Nadu.

Investigations and arrests in connection with the Kallakurichi liquor tragedy

Stalin announced that a retired judge would investigate the liquor tragedy. The criminal investigation is also underway.

He announced that about 20 people had been arrested in connection with the incident and that efforts to apprehend other suspects were ongoing.

According to the government report, 58 people have died in the tragedy so far.

AIADMK criticises government’s reaction to liquor tragedy

The AIADMK MPs, who had already left the assembly because of the liquor tragedy, demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Stalin.

The party’s general secretary, Edappadi K Palaniswami, criticised the state government’s response to the incident.

He accused the government of lethargy and blamed it for delays in treating the victims, saying that 55 people had died and 183 had been affected.

Judicial investigation and compensation for victims announced

The Tamil Nadu government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the liquor tragedy, to be headed by retired Madras High Court Judge B. Gokuldas.

The CB-CID of Tamil Nadu Police under SP Shantharam has also launched an investigation.

Prime Minister Stalin announced a compensation of Rs 1 million for the families of the victims, who were undergoing treatment and were to receive Rs 50,000 each.
