Pipeline surfer killed in shark attack in Hawaii, emergency officials say

Tamayo Perry, 49, was attacked in the water near the north shore of Oahu.

Tamayo Perry, 49, was attacked in the water off Goat Island around noon Sunday, the Honolulu Emergency Services Department said in a statement.

Perry had been a lifeguard with Honolulu Ocean Safety since 2016. He was also a local surf coach and competed in the Pipeline Master Trials for years, according to his official bio on his coach page.

According to IMDB, Perry appeared in the 2002 film “Blue Crush” as well as episodes of “Hawaii Five-O” and “The Bridge.”

Perry was a “well-known North Shore fisherman” who was “a model of bravery, dedication and deep sense of duty,” Mayor Rick Blangiardi said in a statement.

“We will never forget his heroic actions and his tireless commitment to the safety of our residents and visitors,” said the mayor.

Goat Island is located off Mālaekahana Beach on the northeast coast of Oahu.

The first emergency call came in around 1 p.m. on Sunday, authorities said. Perry’s body was brought to shore on a jet ski.

“A caller informed dispatchers that the man’s body appeared to have suffered more than just a shark bite,” emergency services said in a statement.
