San Angelo police warn of dangers caused by summer heat in parked cars

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) – Police Officer Richard Espinoza emphasizes the rapid rise in temperature in vehicles parked in direct sunlight.

“People need to be aware that the temperature inside a vehicle when it’s exposed to direct sunlight can increase by 20 degrees within 10 minutes compared to outside,” said Espinoza, San Angelo Police Department spokesman. “In an hour, it can increase by about 50 degrees.”

Espinoza advises calling 9-1-1 in emergencies, as police officers can help in such situations. “We want to remind the public to be careful not to have children and pets in the back seats of their vehicles. Even on a day when it’s 80 degrees outside, the temperature in a closed car can rise above 100 degrees in less than half an hour,” he added.

With the summer heat increasing, San Angelo Police are urging residents to be cautious and not leave children and pets in parked cars.
