Race for police chief in San Angelo

Follow this live blog to see the results of Saturday’s San Angelo police chief runoff election. Election Day results are considered unofficial until they are counted.

In the May 4 election, none of the three candidates in the race for San Angelo police chief received 50% plus one vote. The results triggered a runoff election on Saturday between the two candidates with the most votes, Lt. Mike Hernandez and Sgt. Travis Griffith.

Hernandez received 49.52% of the vote in the May 4 election, while Griffith received 46.51%. Hernandez was ahead by 199 votes.

Final unofficial results

10:30 p.m. Of 56,262 registered voters, 8,381 participated in the runoff election, representing a turnout of 14.9 percent in a heated race for the post of San Angelo’s top police officer. The election came down to fewer than 500 votes.

Travis Griffith: 4,408 (52.6%)

Mike Hernandez: 3,973 (47.4%)

Final unofficial results in

10:20 p.m. Griffith narrowly beat Hernandez in Saturday’s election, winning the runoff election for police chief with 435 votes, or 5.2% of the votes cast.

Griffiths: 4,015 (52.22%)

Hernandez: 3,674 (47.78%)

20:43 Overall, including mail-in ballots counted so far, early voting and Election Day votes, Griffith leads Hernandez by 301 votes and 4.1%. Election officials are still counting Election Day votes for the runoff.

Combined results of early voting and mail-in voting

20:05 Before runoff day, 836 San Angelo voters cast their ballots by mail and 4,745 cast their votes early, bringing the total to 5,581.

Official results from the May 4 election show that 6,639 voters cast their ballots in the police chief election, including absentee ballots, early voting and voting on Election Day.

Griffiths: 2,823 (50.58%)

Hernandez: 2,758 (49.42%)

19:52. Counting early and absentee ballots, Griffith has an incredibly narrow lead of 65 votes, or 1.16%, over Hernandez.

19:47. The Tom Green County Elections Office uploaded these results, which show Griffith just a hair ahead of Hernandez.

For early voting:

Griffiths: 2,462 (51.89%)

Hernandez: 2,283 (48.11%)

For postal voting:

Griffiths: 361 (43.18%)

Travis: 475 (56.82%)

19:40 Full results have been awaited since polls closed at 7 p.m. The race for San Angelo Police Chief is generating a lot of interest in the community.

The results of early voting and mail-in voting were released just a few minutes ago and show that Griffith is narrowly in the lead.
