Race for police chief in San Angelo

In the May 4 election, none of the three candidates in the race for San Angelo police chief received 50% plus one vote. The results triggered a runoff election on Saturday between the two candidates with the most votes, Lt. Mike Hernandez and Sgt. Travis Griffith.

Hernandez received 49.52% of the vote in the May 4 election, while Griffith received 46.51%. Hernandez was ahead by 199 votes.

Final unofficial results

10:30 p.m. Of 56,262 registered voters, 8,381 participated in the runoff election, representing a turnout of 14.9 percent in a heated race for the post of San Angelo’s top police officer. The election came down to fewer than 500 votes.
