MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Saturday provided updates on two more ships carrying Filipino sailors that were also attacked by Houthi rebels.

Migrant Workers Minister Hans Cacdac said the Foreign Ministry is in talks with foreign governments to secure the release of the 17 Filipino seafarers aboard the MV Galaxy Leader in November 2023.

“The ongoing efforts for their release are being undertaken through the Foreign Ministry. The Foreign Ministry is communicating with foreign governments that have channels of communication with the Houthi rebels with the aim of achieving the release of our sailors and their safe return home,” Cacdac said in a news forum.

On the other hand, the remains of two Filipino sailors who were on board the MV True Confidence attacked in March 2024 were expected to return to the Philippines soon.

Eleven other Filipino seafarers on board the MV True Confidence have already returned to the Philippines.

“The remains of the two sailors are expected to return home soon,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cacdac added that in light of recent events, the DMW is considering banning ships from entering the Red Sea.

“In light of this recent incident, we are reviewing the current policy. So just give us some time to review the policy. Just give us the space to review the policy,” Cacdac said.

On 12 June, the MV Tutor was attacked while crossing the Red Sea.

Authorities said 21 Filipino sailors were rescued, but they are still looking for another.
