Pat Hoberg’s gambling investigation, explains: Umpire disciplined for violating MLB sports betting guidelines

The MLB was riddled with gambling scandals throughout the 2024 season.

From Shohei Ohtani and Ippei Mizuhara to David Fletcher, the league has been busy with behind-the-scenes investigations. The latest offender of gambling violations is referee Pat Hoberg.

MLB became aware of the situation during 2024 spring training and pulled Hoberg from the field while they investigated. He did not commentate on a game in 2024 and last appeared in an MLB game in 2023.

Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich of The Athletic reported that MLB disciplined Hoberg for his violations. Hoberg is appealing the decision to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred.

Hoberg began umpiring MLB games in 2017. Game 2 of the 2022 World Series was his famous “perfect game” call.

Pat Hoberg Gambling Investigation, Explained

MLB concluded its investigation into Hoberg on Friday, June 14, and decided to discipline the umpire for the gambling violations.

“Although MLB’s investigation found no evidence that games manipulated by Mr. Hoberg were compromised or tampered with in any way, MLB concluded that disciplinary action was warranted,” MLB said in a statement.

Hoberg has appealed the decision, so that is all the information that has been made public at this time. Manfred will hear the appeal.

MLB said it had “found no evidence that the games rigged by Mr. Hoberg were compromised or manipulated in any way,” but still felt that “disciplinary action was warranted.”
