USM football player killed in nighttime shooting; investigations ongoing

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi (WDAM) – A shooting investigation is underway following the death of a football player at the University of Southern Mississippi.

The shooting occurred late Tuesday night at the Ivy Row apartment complex on Ivy Row Circle.

Forrest County Coroner Lisa Klem later identified the victim as 21-year-old Marcus Daniels Jr. of George County. She also confirmed that Daniels had been shot and his body was sent to the coroner’s office for an autopsy.

Daniels was a standout football player at George County High School. He previously played at Ole Miss before transferring to USM.

A journalist saw coach Will Hall and other USM officials as well as police and emergency services on site on Tuesday evening.

WDAM has reached out to Hattiesburg police for more information, but they said they have nothing further to share at this time. They hope to provide more details later today.
