Editor’s note: This story has been updated to correct the address of the home that caught fire.

A bedridden elderly man died in a house fire in Los Angeles on Monday morning, but his elderly wife was able to escape.

The fire was first reported shortly after 10:30 a.m. at 2519 W. 74.th St. in LA’s Hyde Park neighborhood, according to preliminary information from the Los Angeles Fire Department.

When firefighters arrived, the 101-year-old home — which was not equipped with smoke detectors — was already fully engulfed in flames. It took 43 firefighters less than 15 minutes to reach, contain and completely extinguish the blaze, the LAFD said.

“Although there were no smoke detectors in the 101-year-old home, an elderly woman was alerted to the fire and was able to escape through the back of the house,” the LAFD said.

The woman, whose age and name were not immediately released, was not injured.

Her husband, who was bedridden according to the LAFD, was found lifeless outside the house. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No injuries to firefighters were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
