Police chief recommends dismissal of officer after arrest incident involving police dog

CANTON, Ohio (News Talk 1480 WHBC) – Canton’s police chief is calling on the city’s public safety director to terminate the employment of the officer involved in the controversial May 30 arrest.

In a press release, Police Chief John Gabbard said he wanted to fire Officer Nicholas Casto for allowing his police dog to attack a man lying on the ground.

The body camera video shows that the man appears to be handcuffed with his hands behind his back.

Casto has been on leave since the incident.

He has a hearing before Security Director Andrea Perry later this month.

In the press release, Chief Gabbard says he has reviewed the incident and describes the action as “not consistent with our mission, values or training.”

He says the officer’s actions were “clear violations of department policy.”

Charges are being brought against three men, including the one attacked by the dog.
