ICE arrests 38 illegal immigrants, including convicted rapists and sex offenders

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Division of Enforcement and Removal Operations in Newark, New Jersey, conducted an approximately two-week operation that resulted in the arrest of 38 illegal aliensaccording to a Thursday Press release from the Federal Immigration Service.

The operation, which lasted from April 15 to 26, arrested “serious offenders” with previous convictions and/or pending charges.

“We will deploy the full force of our immigration authorities.”

One of those arrested, a 36-year-old Honduran citizen, had previously been “convicted of rape, false imprisonment, sexual offenses and perverse practices,” ICE reported. That person was deported from the country in 2017.

ICE also arrested a 27-year-old citizen of the Dominican Republic “who was convicted of endangering a child by a person not responsible for his or her care.”

A 39-year-old detained Mexican citizen had previously been deported from the United States after being convicted of prostitution and driving under the influence.

Others arrested included a 26-year-old Chilean national convicted of burglary and a 46-year-old Colombian national accused of “money laundering, promotion of gambling and conspiracy/promotion of gambling.”

In response to the arrests, ERO Newark field office director John Tsoukaris said, “Those who enter our country illegally and break our laws should know that we will use the full power of our immigration authorities to bring them to justice.”

“These individuals were taken into ERO custody and removal actions were initiated under the Immigration and Nationality Act,” Tsoukaris noted.

ICE’s focus is on detaining illegal immigrants who have committed crimes in addition to entering the country illegally.

“In fiscal year 2023, ERO arrested 73,822 noncitizens with criminal histories; this group had 290,178 related charges and convictions, with an average of four per person. These included 33,209 assault charges; 4,390 sexual assault charges; 7,520 weapons offenses; 1,713 murder charges or convictions; and 1,655 kidnapping offenses,” ICE reported.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey announced Thursday the arrest of six Chilean nationals charged in connection with a burglary ring that targeted homes in several states, including New York and Maryland. According to a Justice Department report Press releaseThe suspects stole jewelry, collectibles and other goods.

The suspects were charged with “one count of conspiracy to sell and receive stolen property that crossed state lines and one count of receiving stolen property that crossed state lines.”

Tsoukaris said: “The arrests of a group of foreign-born individuals involved in interstate crimes demonstrate how important cooperation between different law enforcement agencies continues to be.”
