87-year-old woman left ‘shocked’ after her dogs were attacked on the beach

An 87-year-old woman is left “shocked” after a Doberman attacked her three dogs on Great Yarmouth beach.

Sarah King said her elderly mother and a friend were walking their dogs between Wellington Pier and Pleasure Beach.

The four dogs, including three Shelties, were walking along the beach when two women appeared in the dunes and a Doberman darted out and attacked the group.

“Mom heard her oldest dog screaming and saw him lying on his back in the sand, pinned or turned over,” Ms. King said. “When her three dogs ran away, the Doberman followed them.”

Two of the Shelties fled across the street while the third ran towards her mother on the promenade.

Her mother was forced to cling to the wall for support in case the Doberman knocked her down.

“It went up to my mother’s dog, who was with her, and grabbed my mother’s leg,” Ms. King recalled.

“She was wearing waterproofs over her trousers and the dog grabbed her too before running off to chase the others.”

The missing dogs were tracked down with the help of passers-by, but one of their coats was “torn to shreds”.

When the group reunited, the two mysterious women and their dogs were gone.

“The mother was very shaken and one of the dogs was shaky and withdrawn for a few days afterwards,” Ms King said.

Ms King, who has been a trained animal carer for 32 years, said she had seen many dogs with very different temperaments and was confident her mother’s Shelties had “not a mean bone in their bodies”.

“I just want to get the story out there to start a conversation,” she said.

“There are safe dog parks all over the area and more are being added all the time.

“There is really no excuse for letting a dog with this temperament run off-leash in a public place.”

A spokeswoman for Norfolk Police said they received a report of the incident at 7.16pm on Thursday May 16 and the officer arranged to speak to the victim.
