Police return to the home of the suspect in four Gilgo Beach murders

Investigators returned Monday to the home of a man accused of killing four women about 14 years ago, whose remains were found on or near Gilgo Beach, New York.

New York State Police were seen at the Massapequa Park residence of Rex Heuermann, who is charged in the deaths of four women. Video from NBC New York showed police officers at the residence.

Robert Macedonio, a lawyer for Heuermann’s estranged wife Asa Ellerup, confirmed that police were at the couple’s former home.

“I can confirm that there is a police presence at the residence this morning,” Macedonio said. “…I understand they are also executing another search warrant.”

Heuermann, an architect, was arrested in July 2023 and charged with the murders of four women whose remains were found on or near Gilgo Beach, which is on Long Island’s south shore not far from Massapequa Park.

Heuermann was charged with the deaths of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25; Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Lynn Costello, 27.

According to police, the women’s remains were found near Gilgo Beach in December 2010. The remains were among 11 found as of 2010, although Heuermann was only charged in four deaths.

One set was found on Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach in December 2010, and then 10 more were found there and in other parts of Suffolk and Nassau counties, police said on a website dedicated to the Gilgo Beach murders .

The New York State Police referred questions to the Suffolk County, New York, District Attorney’s Office on Monday.

A spokesman for District Attorney Ray Tierney’s office said the office does not comment on the ongoing investigation.

“As District Attorney Tierney has previously stated, the work of the Gilgo Beach Homicide Task Force continues,” the spokesman said. “We are not commenting on the ongoing investigation.”
