The Hopkins girls lacrosse team rallies around Lauren Olson months after a horrific accident

HOPKINS, Minn. – Lacrosse games mean something more to the Hopkins girls team.

“We’re playing for her this season because we know she wishes she could,” Avery Shaw said.

Instead of competing on the field, number 51 is on the sidelines recovering.

“It was great to have Lauren back,” said one of her teammates.

Two months ago, Lauren Olson was turning left on Highway 7 in Minnetonka when she was struck by an unlicensed driver who ran a red light.

Olson underwent multiple surgeries and was placed in an induced coma to allow her brain to heal.

Nevertheless, she made a remarkable recovery.

“We all know she is the strongest girl ever, but to see her come through like that and recover so quickly was amazing,” said Tori Katzenmeyer.

Co-captain Ella Perry says Olson is already stepping up.

“She’s still a big part of the team,” said Ella Perry, co-captain of the Hopkins lacrosse team.

He quickly became honorary coach of the goalkeepers.

“Lauren came and helped coach them, told them what to do and helped them. That’s cool to see,” Tori said.

But her teammates want the driver to be held responsible.

A search warrant shows that investigators requested a blood sample from that driver because the man could not speak or walk. They say tests showed his blood alcohol level was zero, and investigators say they are still waiting to reconstruct the accident.

He was not charged.

“I feel like something should happen, he shouldn’t get away with this, it’s just really sad,” Ella said.

But there is one good that surpasses all: family reunification.
