A father is dead and his son is in custody after a shooting in Kettering on Friday.

Around 3:30 p.m., Kettering police and paramedics were called to a home in the 2700 block of Haig Avenue for reports of a shooting, according to a Kettering police spokesman.

According to a media release, a caller told police that a son had shot his father in the house.

The son, identified as Justin Scott August, was arrested immediately upon police arrival at the scene and taken to Kettering Prison.

The father was pronounced dead at the scene.

August is initially charged with negligent homicide.

Neighbors said they were minding their business until they heard loud noises.

“A lot of patrol cars pulled up, we saw a lot of police officers running down the street with guns, I think eight of them ran past,” Matisen Merkle said.

Merkle was confused about what was going on four doors away from her.

“We heard a little shouting and couldn’t really hear what they were saying,” she said.

Verna Murphy has lived in this neighborhood for 12 years.

“It’s very unfortunate that something like this happens,” she said.

But she said she still feels safe here.

“It doesn’t make me nervous about living here or about the child. “It just seems like something unfortunate happened,” Murphy said.
