TxDOT says improvements are coming to the accident-prone intersection in West Bexar County

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – It’s a dangerous intersection that has already proven deadly.

One person died Monday after their box truck crashed into an 18-wheeler at the intersection of U.S. Highway 90 and State Highway 211.

“Every time you drive out of our neighborhood, you take your life into your own hands,” said resident Kim Buettner, who lives near US-90 and SH-211.

People who live near US-90 and SH-211 said they are no strangers to car accidents and bottlenecks.

“When this box truck and an 18-wheeler collided, the driver of that box truck was killed. When you heard about it…” KSAT asked Buettner and his roommate Steve Mireles.

“Someone else, someone else’s loved one just died,” Mireles said.

“Why do we have to continue to have these fatal accidents?” said Büttner.

Neighbors we spoke to are now calling for change to save lives.

“We’ve had subdivisions built with hundreds of houses, an HEB, a Whataburger, all the things that grow in this area,” said resident Roxanna Mireles. “And I understand the growth, but we need our roads to grow.”

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, changes are planned at the intersection.

“Both short-term and long-term improvements are currently planned for the intersection of US-90 and SH-211,” TxDOT public information officer Laura Lopez told KSAT. “The existing flashing beacons on SH-211 will be converted to standard traffic signals. This work is being carried out by a developer as part of mitigating the traffic impact of an adjacent development.”

Lopez said TxDOT plans to build a west-east turnaround on US-90. The project is expected to begin this summer with an estimated completion date of 2026.

TxDOT also plans a $260 million transportation investment to convert U.S. 90 into an expressway from SH-211 to Loop 1604. This project is expected to be completed in 2025, officials said.
