High school sweethearts are about to get engaged in a motorcycle accident

Less than a month before the expected engagement, two high school friends were killed in a motorcycle accident.

The pair were riding a black 2008 Harley-Davidson FX motorcycle along Whidbey Island, Washington state, on Thursday, May 2, when they crashed into a pole around 8 p.m. local time, said Ed Wallace, sheriff’s detective Island County, according to Newsday.

The two were on their way to Ebey’s Landing, a local nature reserve, at the time of the crash, Patch.com reported.

Family members identified the couple as 28-year-old Sam Cullen and 27-year-old Suzie Kedar, both to local outlets and through a GoFundMe campaign.

Cullen reportedly died at the scene. Kedar was taken to a local hospital where she also later died.

“I know Sam treated Suzie like his queen,” Cullen’s mother Shari told Patch.com. “She was his queen.”

Cullen was stationed on the island as a Petty Officer 2nd Class in the United States Navy, his family said on GoFundMe. He and Kedar met while attending Farmingdale High School in New York.

After spending more than a decade together, Cullen planned to ask Kedar for her hand in marriage, News 12 Long Island reported. Within a week of the accident, he sent his mother a photo of the ring.

According to Patch.com, Cullen planned to pop the question on June 1, when they expected to attend a game between their hometown MLB team, the New York Mets, and their local team, the Seattle Mariners.

According to News 12 Long Island, the U.S. Navy helped transport Cullen’s body back to New York. Meanwhile, family members raised money through GoFundMe to bring Kedar home and pay for funeral expenses.

As of midday Friday, May 10, the online fundraiser had raised more than $54,000.

According to the GoFundMe campaign, a viewing for the couple will be held at the Jerusalem Memorial Chapels in Levittown, NY on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held the following day at 11 a.m

“You could tell by the way they looked at each other that they felt in love and were in love with each other,” Kedar’s sister Shivanie Varickamackal told Newsday.

Both Cullen and Kedar were reportedly wearing helmets when the accident occurred. Police said neither drugs nor alcohol were to blame for the crash, which remains under investigation

According to the GoFundMe, Kedar is survived by her mother and three sisters, while Cullen is survived by his two parents and five siblings.
