Police and fire department respond to numerous emergency calls after severe thunderstorms in the region (updated 11 p.m.)

Police and firefighters in Marion County are responding to numerous calls after a line of severe thunderstorms moved through the area Monday evening, prompting both tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings. There are no reports of injuries.

The first call to the Salem Fire Department was a report that a tree had fallen on a home on 420 South Franklin and the resident was trapped inside. The resident was safely evacuated and the case was turned over to Ameren.

Salem firefighters report that a home at 1437 North College may have been struck by lightning. Firefighters drilled two holes in the roof of the home to confirm the fire was out. No one was home at the time.

Firefighters are also responding to a transformer fire behind a home on East Bennett Street.

Salem firefighters received a report of a fire or explosion near Citation Oil. It turned out to be a power outage that activated the large glass flare to burn off excess oilfield gas.

Salem Police received numerous reports of fallen tree branches.

Marion County Sheriff Kevin Cripps reports that Tonti Road east of Route 37 is closed until further notice because a large tree is completely blocking the road. A tree has knocked down power lines in the parking lot of the sheriff’s office, knocking out power. The office is using emergency power.

The Sheriff’s Department also reports damage to tents at the fairgrounds. There are also reports of downed power lines in the 100 block of DeWitt Street in Odin.

Patoka Fire Chief Blake Hyde reports that a large power line fell from one of the 60- to 80-foot-tall towers across Kinoka Road between Farthing and Seven Hills and a detour is necessary.

Ameren Illinois reported 1,574 power outages in Salem and 536 in the Odin area as of 11 p.m. Another 55 were without power in the Vernon area.

Tri-County Electric reported 468 power outages in Marion County and 70 in Jefferson County. Of these, 191 are in Foster Township, 94 in Kinmundy Township, 56 in Patoka Township and 54 in Salem Township.
