PARKERSBURG – Parkersburg police pulled a man in distress from the Ohio River early Sunday morning.

Officers received a report about 1 a.m. Sunday of someone struggling in the river, Parkersburg police Capt. RL Koher said. The man was in a kayak on the Belpre side of the river, so officers crossed the bridge and parked at Rite Aid, where they could hear him screaming for help.

“They went down and pulled him, his kayak, his backpack and everything else out so he wouldn’t drown,” said Koher.

The man was examined on site by emergency services and refused to be transferred to a hospital, Koher said.
