A man has died in a tractor-trailer accident on US 58

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – Motorists experienced delays on US 58 for most of the day Friday due to a crash.

According to officials, Chesapeake police were dispatched around 4:10 a.m. to US 58 near the 5100 block of West Military Highway for reports of a collision between a tractor-trailer and a white sedan. This is close to Hampton Roads Executive Airport.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a male driver, the driver of the sedan, dead.

An investigation revealed that the driver of the semi-truck was traveling westbound and was about to make a U-turn when the driver of the sedan struck the semi-truck.

The accident caused the tractor-trailer’s fuel tank to burst, spilling large amounts of diesel fuel onto the road. Chesapeake Public Works workers said the eastbound lanes will be closed until approximately 2 p.m. to allow for hazardous materials cleanup.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area as crews work to clear the road.

According to police, the driver of the tractor-trailer remained on scene. The accident remains under investigation.
