Louisiana police officer killed in hostage situation

According to NBC affiliate KADN, a Lafayette police officer has died after a standoff at a home in Jeanerette. The incident, which began with a hostage situation while U.S. Marshals were executing a warrant, escalated when the suspect fired shots. Three officers were injured and a fourth was killed. The officer killed was identified as Senior Corporal Segus Jolivette. Lafayette Police were on scene to assist. The suspect, Nyjal Hurst, is now in custody. Lafayette Police released the following statement: “Early this afternoon, the Lafayette Police Department SWAT team assisted the Jeanerette City Marshal’s Office with a hostage situation in Jeanerette, LA. The incident began earlier in the day after the Jeanerette City Marshal’s Office attempted to execute a warrant. The suspect had multiple warrants out for his arrest and they requested the assistance of our SWAT team. The Lafayette Police Department has a mutual aid agreement with surrounding agencies to assist in the event of a critical incident or emergency. During the course of operations, the suspect fired multiple shots at police. Four Lafayette Police officers were injured. Two officers were shot and the other two officers were struck by bullet fragments. All officers involved were transported to an area hospital. Three officers are currently in good condition with non-life threatening injuries. As a result of the shooting, the fourth officer was killed in the line of duty. The Lafayette Police Department mourns the loss of one of our own. Please pray for these officers and their families during this tragic time.” The names of the other officers have not been released.
