Houston Home Insurance Already High, Hurricane Beryl Will Make It Worse

Home insurance in Houston is already sky high, and many are wondering how much worse it will be after Hurricane Beryl.

“Going forward, we must prepare for continued rate and premium increases,” said Rich Johnson, communications director for the (ICT) Insurance Council of Texas.

Rate hikes are coming and we need to prepare for them. But there is some good news, relatively speaking. Rate hikes will not be as severe as they have been over the past two years.

“In 2022, we saw a 23% increase, and in 2023, we saw a 25% increase,” Johnson told KTRH. “So those were double-digit percentage increases, and we think that’s going to slow down. We’re probably looking at single-digit increases.”

It’s obviously all about cost and risk. But the biggest impact in recent years has been the economy and inflation.

When it comes to impending premium spikes, Johnson says it’s never too early to start shopping for the best rate.
