6 Arrested for sexually harassing three Dalit girls and attacking relatives in Bahraich

Bahraich: Five persons, including a woman, were attacked with sharp weapons while protesting against the alleged harassment of three Dalit girls in Bahraich district, police said on Monday. Police have filed charges against nine accused in the case and arrested six persons, it said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rural) Pavitra Mohan Tripathi told PTI that a member of the Dalit community living in Motisingh Purva village under Nanpara police station limits had complained that three young women of his family were harassed while they were shopping at Bodhwa junction on Sunday evening.

Salman and Aslam, who run a butcher shop in the market, allegedly harassed the girls. When the girls and the brother of one of them protested, the two attacked them, Tripathi said.

Tripathi said when the family members and other villagers tried to rescue the girls, the attackers allegedly brought meat cutters and sharp weapons from their shop and attacked them.

A girl and four men were injured in the incident and are currently undergoing treatment. One of the injured men has been admitted to the district hospital in Bahraich as his condition is critical, Tripathi said.

The Additional SP (rural) also said that a case has been registered against nine accused under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Of these, six persons have been arrested.

He added that the other three accused would also be arrested soon.

Tripathi said that since both communities were involved in the incident, a sufficient number of police personnel had been deployed to the area given the sensitivity of the incident.

He added that the situation in the region was fully under control.
