College football player dies in cliff jumping accident

LOGAN, Utah – A cornerback for the Utah State University football team has died after failing to resurface during a jump from the cliffs of a reservoir, authorities said.

A university press release confirmed the death of 22-year-old Andre Seldon Jr. of Belleville, Michigan. Seldon transferred to Utah State after playing the last two seasons at New Mexico State. He also played two seasons at Michigan.

“Our football program is deeply saddened to have to deal with the loss of one of our members,” said Nate Dreiling, Utah State’s interim coach and defensive coordinator, in a statement. “Having previously shared a relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you that he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we grieve with them over this terrible loss.”

According to the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews were called to Porcupine Reservoir on Friday afternoon. A press release from the sheriff’s office said Seldon was observed jumping off a cliff into the water but did not resurface.

A dive team recovered Seldon’s body shortly after 9 p.m. Friday. The sheriff’s office says Seldon’s death appears to be the result of a “tragic accident.”

Seldon played for Belleville High School in Michigan. Last season, he appeared in 15 games for New Mexico State and recorded 36 tackles, seven pass defenses and one interception.

“Our Utah State University Athletics family is devastated by the sudden passing of Andre Seldon Jr.,” Vice President and Athletic Director Diana Sabau said in a statement. “We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates and all who loved Andre.”
