Motorcyclist killed in north Las Vegas crash; Suspect in custody

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – North Las Vegas police are investigating after a motorcyclist was killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday evening.

According to a police report, officers were dispatched to the area of ​​Owens Ave. around 6:21 p.m. dispatched to the area of ​​James St. after reports of a crash between a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle.

Arriving officers determined that the accident involved a blue Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a brown 2011 Chevrolet HHR. The motorcyclist, a 29-year-old man, was thrown from the motorcycle and apparently suffered serious injuries.

Medical personnel responded to the scene where the motorcyclist was pronounced dead. The driver of the Chevrolet HHR was uninjured.

The NLVPD Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU) was notified and took over the investigation. Their preliminary investigation revealed that the Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed on Owens Ave. headed west. At this time the Chevrolet HHR was located on Owens Ave. stopped near James St. westbound in the center turn lane.

Police said the Harley-Davidson reportedly attempted to avoid other vehicles by turning into the center median. The Harley-Davidson then crashed into the rear of the Chevrolet HHR, causing the motorcyclist to be thrown from the motorcycle.

The driver of the Chevrolet HHR, 43-year-old Crystal Hughey, showed signs of impairment and was arrested. Hughey was booked into the North Las Vegas Community Correctional Center on charges of drunk driving, child endangerment and other traffic offenses.

Traffic officers continue to investigate this accident and determined that speed and lack of a motorcycle license are likely factors for the motorcyclist.

The identity of the deceased and the cause and manner of death will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
