Triple murder suspect in Mexican surfer death reportedly confessed to girlfriend that he killed ‘three gringos’: report

One of the suspects believed to be linked to the murders of two Australian brothers and an American who were on a surfing trip in Mexico is said to have admitted to his girlfriend that he killed all three.

During a court hearing on Wednesday, the BBC reported that Ari Gisel, the girlfriend of alleged murderer Jesús Gerardo Garcia Cota, allegedly showed up at her home on April 28 and told her he had done something to “three gringos.” Gringo is a slang term used to describe English-speaking foreigners.

When she asked what he meant, Gisel stated that Garcia Cota said, “I killed her.”

Under Mexican law, prosecutors identified him by his first name, Jesús Gerardo, aka “el Kekas,” a slang word meaning “quesadillas,” or cheese tortillas.

After admitting to the crime, Garcia Cota allegedly took Gisel outside to show her his vehicle, which reportedly had tires on it that were allegedly stolen from the victim’s truck, Gisel said in court.

Mexican authorities believe all the surfers were killed because thieves wanted their truck’s tires.

The three men, brothers Jake and Callum Robinson from Australia and American Jack Carter Rhoad, were on a camping and surfing trip along a stretch of coast south of the city of Ensenada when they went missing last weekend.

Senior Prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez suspected that the killers drove by, saw the pickup truck and the foreigners’ tents and wanted to steal their tires. But “when (the strangers) came up and caught them, they certainly resisted.”

The thieves then allegedly went to a location she described as “extremely difficult to reach” and allegedly dumped the bodies into a well-known well. A fourth body was also found in the well.

Ramírez said investigators did not rule out the possibility that the same suspects also dumped the first, earlier body into the well as part of previous crimes.

All three bodies had a gunshot wound to the head, Reuters reported, citing a source in the attorney general’s office.

The Robinson brothers’ mother gave a moving tribute to her sons on a San Diego beach Tuesday.

“Our hearts are broken and the world has become a darker place for us,” said Debra Robinson, fighting back tears. “They were young men who enjoyed their passion for surfing together.”

During her speech, Robinson noted that her son Jake loved surfing so much that he enjoyed working as a doctor in hospitals near the beach.

“Jake’s passion was surfing and it was no coincidence that many of the hospitals he worked at were near surfing beaches,” she said. “Live bigger, shine brighter and love stronger in her memory,” she said.

Garcia Cota is being prosecuted for the crime of “enforced disappearance by private citizen” and murder charges are expected to be filed later, the BBC reported.

Prosecutors added that they are continuing to gather evidence to charge two additional suspects who remain in custody for alleged possession of methamphetamine.
