One girl is dead, another fights for her life after a truck rams a horse-drawn carriage in Cumberland

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — One girl is dead and another is in critical condition after an accident on Sunday evening in Cumberland County with a horse-drawn carriage.

Shortly before 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, Virginia State Police officers responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash in the 2700 block of Cumberland Road.


The crash involved a Ford F250 pickup truck and a horse-drawn carriage. According to state police, both vehicles were traveling south on Cumberland Road when the truck struck the horse-drawn carriage from behind.

All seven people in the buggy were injured in the accident. One of them, a minor girl whose age the state police could not disclose at this time, died at the scene. Another girl, whose age was also not disclosed, remains in critical condition.

The remaining five people suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening. According to state police, the driver of the truck was not injured in the accident.

“After consultation with the prosecutor, charges are still pending,” the state police said.

The accident remains under investigation. No further information is available at this time.
