2 teenagers killed, 1 seriously injured in high-speed crash in Big Lake

Two teenagers were killed and one was seriously injured in a high-speed accident in Sherburne County on Saturday.

The driver of the vehicle, Donovan Paul Gobel, 17, of Elk River, and passenger Anthony Scott Krider, also 17, of Elk River, were killed in the crash, according to a Minnesota State Patrol report.

Another passenger, Charles Walter Gabrelcik, 17, of Elk River, suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash, the report said. He was taken to Hennepin Healthcare for treatment.

According to the report, the single-vehicle accident occurred around 2:45 p.m. Saturday at Highway 25/Pleasant Avenue in Big Lake.

According to the report, a Big Lake police officer was traveling south on Highway 25 and observed a 2011 BMW 535 exceeding the speed limit on Highway 25 northbound near Tarrytown Road.

The officer turned around to stop the BMW. According to the report, he came across an accident scene where the BMW veered off the right side of the road and overturned.

According to the report, all three occupants of the BMW were wearing seat belts. The car’s airbag was deployed.

Big Lake Police and Fire Departments, CentraCare Ambulance, Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office and Becker Police responded. The accident remains under investigation, according to the report.
