Tropical storm fading for Houston

The city is advising residents to stock up on food due to a tropical storm warning in southeastern Harris County that includes parts of Houston.

The tropical storm warning applies to areas near south and east Houston, in addition to hurricane and tropical storm warnings in surrounding counties. Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to make landfall about 100 miles (160 kilometers) southwest of the city, between Corpus Christi and Matagorda Bay, early Monday.

Beryl is expected to bring heavy rain, flooding, wind and potentially tornadoes to the Houston area in the coming days. The worst weather is expected to occur between Sunday night and Tuesday morning, though officials do not plan to issue evacuation advisories for the storm, Houston Office of Emergency Management spokesman Brent Taylor said. The statement asked residents to stock up on supplies, including prescription medications, for five to seven days as a precaution and to develop a family communication plan.

Residents are also urged to learn how to turn off their utilities in an emergency, although the statement said they should only turn off gas if instructed to do so by local authorities or CenterPoint Energy.
