Latest news on the Ukraine war: Russia rejects Turkey’s offer after Putin meets Erdogan; day of mourning in Ukrainian city | World news

Western leaders should “reconsider” the amount of weapons they supply to Ukraine and “drastically increase” them, a Ukrainian MP said.

Kira Rudik told Sky News that Ukraine could only fight Russian aggression and win the war if it got more air defense systems.

“Right now, we can’t promise people that when they go to bed in the morning, they’ll wake up again,” she said.

“This is the most important issue for Ukraine at the moment: we need air defense so that we can continue to fight and push Russia back.”

Asked about fears that the American-built F-16 jets could face a similar fate to other fighter planes that Russia is targeting at Ukrainian air bases, Ms Rudik said increased air defenses would protect the planes.

She added that Ukraine’s allies need to change their perspective from “let Ukraine fight” to “let us win the war.”

“We still believe that we can win this war and that our people are ready to fight,” she said.

“The situation is so critical and we call on all heads of state and government to rethink the amount of weapons they are sending us and to increase them dramatically, because we know that we are not just fighting for ourselves, but for freedom, values and what the world should look like.”

Regarding Western fears that Russia could escalate the situation by handing over modern weapons and fighter jets to Ukraine, Ms Rudik said Moscow had “already escalated” the situation.

“They have already committed all kinds of war crimes against our people on our territory, and there is no way they will stop unless someone stops them,” she said.
