Chapvious Provides Fireworks to NYSS in Buffalo

Hamburg, NY – It was a day early, but Chapvious provided the Fourth of July fireworks in the $108,200 New York Sire Stake for 2-year-old trotting fillies at Buffalo Raceway on Wednesday (July 3) by breaking the track record with a three-length victory over Devious Babe in 1:58.2.

The heavily backed Chapvious ($2.10) easily beat the previous mark of 1:59.0 set by Amal Hall on July 11, 2018.

Smoke Show, who was coming into the NYSS after a June 25 Excelsior Series victory in his only lifetime start, charged aggressively for the lead with DW’s Lady Diva and Chapvious close behind.

With splits of :29.4, :59.1 and 1:29.1, Chapvious (Jason Bartlett) closed in on the lead as he turned for home and got rid of Smoke Show. Meanwhile, Devious Babe (Tyler Miller) charged hard down the lane but had no chance of beating Chapvious as a final quarter of :29.0 proved to be the final blow. Smoke Show (Jim Morrill Jr.) held on to third.

Owned by Purple Haze Stables LLC and trained by George Ducharme, Chapvious (Devious Man-Chaperess) earned her second consecutive win in as many starts. The huge sum brought her seasonal earnings to $91,350.

Driver Tyler Buter swept both $20,000 Excelsior Series divisions in similar fashion with come-from-behind victories.

In the first race, Inn Of The Stars (Chapter Seven-Met’s Inn) started from fourth on the three-quarter pole and ran a final panel of 29.1 seconds to edge Carishah Marie by a head in 2:03.0. Inn Of The Stars paid $8.50 for the win.

In the other division, favourite Michelon’s Titan (EL Titan-Royal Melbourne) enjoyed a run from fourth through the first half of the race before getting to work. Michelon’s Titan ($3.50) took the lead heading into the final stretch and easily beat Boost (Claude Huckabone III) by 3-1/4 lengths in 2:01.1.

In the $10,400 A-Open Handicapped Pace for fillies and mares, Shooting Brooke (Joseph Chindano Jr.) rallied but then had to hold off a late surge from Marathon Mary (Drew Monti) to win the $7.90 in 1:55.0. Favorite Summer Slash (Ray Fisher Jr.) came in time for the showing post.

Racing will continue on Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. with a program of 11 races to be presented.
