Boston police arrest three people and confiscate firearms after shot spotter alert in Roxbury

BOSTON – Boston Police Department officers have arrested three men and seized two firearms after being led to the suspects by the activation of a shot spotter in Roxbury.

The incident occurred near the intersection of Marcella Street and Centre Street, where officers were dispatched after the shot spotter system detected ten gunshots.

Ballistic evidence was found at 51 Marcella St.

After receiving descriptions of three suspects and their vehicle via 911 calls and radio, patrol officers located individuals and a vehicle matching the descriptions in a parking lot at the corner of Columbus Avenue and New Heath Street. As officers approached on foot, the suspects began to walk away from their vehicle, which had just been locked.

Officers stopped 32-year-old Romel Sandy, 30-year-old Michael Wornum and 34-year-old Derrick Brown, all from Boston’s South End and Dorchester neighborhoods.

A subsequent investigation led to the discovery of a firearm in a backpack carried by Wornum and another in Sandy’s backpack.

In addition, ballistic evidence was found in a vehicle registered to Brown.

Investigators identified the first firearm seized as a Jiminez Arms Model JA Nine 9 mm with nine rounds in the magazine and the second as a Smith & Wesson M&P Body Guard .380 with an empty chamber and empty magazine.

Sandy is charged with carrying a firearm without a permit and a firearms violation, along with two prior violent and/or drug offenses.

Wornum was charged with carrying a firearm without a permit, a firearms law violation with two previous violent and/or drug offenses, carrying a loaded firearm without a permit, illegal possession of ammunition and resisting state authority.

Brown is accused of illegal possession of ammunition.

All three suspects are expected to be arraigned in Roxbury District Court.
