LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Former Nevada House Representative Steven Brooks is in police custody on drunken driving charges after being involved in a chase with Las Vegas police early Thursday morning.

According to police sources, Brooks was arrested after a chase that began around 4:30 a.m. near Sahara Avenue and Paradise Road and ended less than two miles away at Las Vegas Boulevard and Bonanza Road. The intersection remained closed for nearly four hours.

Brooks, who is familiar with law enforcement due to numerous arrests, was expelled from the Nevada Legislature in 2013 for making death threats against Marilyn Kirkpatrick, who also served as speaker of the Legislature. At the time, Brooks was a second-term Democrat representing North Las Vegas.

On the same day of his deportation, he was arrested by California authorities for a car chase near Barstow, California. This was the beginning of a series of arrests against Brooks, including for domestic violence, resisting arrest, and possession of a firearm not registered to him.

Brooks is currently being held at the Clark County Detention Center. He is facing the following charges:

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol
  • Assault on a protected person using a deadly weapon (2 counts)
  • Driver disregards officer’s orders/endangers other people/property
  • Resisting an officer using a deadly weapon (not a firearm)

He is scheduled to appear in court in Las Vegas on Friday, June 28 to face the charges.
