Man arrested after three people were injured at Euro 2024 – DW – 27.06.2024

Stuttgart police arrested a man early Thursday evening after three people were injured in an altercation during a public viewing of the 2024 European Football Championship match between Turkey and the Czech Republic.

A 25-year-old suspect was arrested and the police cordoned off the area around the Schlossplatz.

Initial findings indicate that a knife was used in the incident, police said.

The injured were taken to hospitals. Officials confirmed that there was no immediate danger to the public.

The public viewing area on the Schlossplatz in southwest Germany offers space for up to 30,000 spectators.

What happened in the match between Türkiye and the Czech Republic?

In the final group match of the 2024 European Championship, Turkey defeated the Czech Republic on Wednesday to secure a place in the round of 16 against Austria.

This is the first time in 16 years that Turkey has reached the knockout phase of a major tournament.

In the 20th minute of the game, the Czech Republic’s squad was reduced to ten men when Antonin Barak received the first red card in European Championship history.

In the match, Hakan Calhanoglu and Cenk Tosun scored the goals for Turkey, while Tomas Soucek scored the only goal for the Czech Republic.

At the final whistle, there were ugly scenes as fans stormed onto the pitch and Czech striker Tomas Chory was shown the red card.
