ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, NC – According to Eden Police, a patient with “serious medical issues” was taken into custody after allegedly stealing a Rockingham County Emergency Services ambulance on June 19.

Rodney Cates, Rockingham County’s emergency services director, said the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. when a patient “became agitated at the scene of the accident,” ran to the ambulance and drove it away.

The patient crashed into a mailbox, but Eden police were able to stop the vehicle using stop sticks, authorities said. No one was injured in the incident, authorities said.

The patient was taken into custody, according to emergency officials. Officials did not release the patient’s name, whether he was charged with a crime, the location of the incident or details about the reason for the ambulance call that led to the theft.
