A Texas community is raising money for a 6-year-old who was attacked with a baseball bat during a break-in at his home

A central Texas community is rallying around the family of a 6-year-old boy fighting for his life weeks after a home invasion.

The boy, Jeremy Diaz, was attacked during a home invasion on Sept. 11 and opened his eyes on Thursday. He did it again Sunday night, his father, Arturo Diaz, told USA TODAY Monday night.

“After the first week, they told us that Jeremy was dying,” his father said. “But he survived that. He has conquered death. They said he had no movement on one side… he’s moving his limbs and a few days ago he opened his eyes.”

When he opened his eyes, Diaz played Jeremy some of his favorite songs and then the boy fell back asleep.

Diaz previously posted a series of updates on his son’s health, saying Friday that the boy needed to be re-intubated. While his lungs were fine, swelling in his throat prevented him from breathing on his own.

“Overall, from our point of view, planning a funeral is now planning rehabilitation,” his father said on Monday.

According to Williamson County officials, a person named Daniel Logan has been arrested in connection with the case. He was charged with aggravated assault and intentional grievous bodily harm or serious mental retardation, impairment or injury to a child.

“Our hearts and prayers are with the little boy and his family during this difficult time,” Logan’s attorney Marc Chavez said in a statement about the case. “While the allegations sound worrying, we ask everyone to reserve judgment until then. “All the facts come to light, particularly as we investigate issues related to serious mental illness.”

Before the attack, Jeremy visited the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai team Rabadi. The group hosted a BBQ chicken lunch on Sunday to raise money for the boy.

“He is making great progress in his recovery,” the group wrote online. “The road is long and unfortunately very expensive. Help us keep the fight funded!”

Jeremy’s father said a burglar broke into their home around 5 a.m. on September 11th. The man had a baseball bat with him. The man used a bat to break down the back door of his house, he said.

“It was actually one of our neighbors,” Diaz told USA TODAY Monday evening. “We have lived here since 2014 and have seen people come and go. One day he just freaked out… He came in and before I could disarm him he had already hurt my son.”

Diaz wrote a heartfelt message about his son on Facebook. The family wants to ensure he receives the best care possible, so they have asked for help through GoFundMe, he said.

‘I am drowning’: According to police, a black teenager screamed for help when a white teenager tried to kill him

The 6-year-old is friendly and a giver, not a taker, the family says

Before the attack, Jeremy had just received his gray belt in jiu-jitsu, his father said. He was proud of his achievement.

Since the incident, his family has heard more and more stories about how the six-year-old makes those around him happy.

His teacher told him that the boy had recently gotten a new classmate who spoke primarily Russian. Jeremy, who is fluent in Chinese, was very patient with his classmate and guided him.

He once even gave his toy to another child at the YMCA when he asked for it, his father said.

“He had told Jeremy he wanted one of his Transformers,” Diaz said. “I came to pick up Jeremy… I rolled down the window and he says, ‘Dad, I don’t know if I can give the Transformer away.'”

His father told him it was entirely up to him. Give the toy as a gift or keep it. Jeremy opened his bag, took out the toy and went to give it to the other little boy, his father said.

“Just tell your mother you found it,” he told the boy.

Jeremy is a giver and his 3-year-old brother looks up to him and follows his every move, his father said.

“It’s interesting,” Diaz said. “Sometimes you go to work and send them to school… then the stories come back to you and then you realize how well-behaved they are. It’s kind of hard to believe… those are the people that hurt the most.

Diaz remembered the last thing his son said to him the night before his home was broken into. The six-year-old went to his father’s desk and said he was ready to read and go to sleep. His father walked him to his bed and he read him a story.

“Dad,” he said to his father after hugging and kissing him, “I love you.”

Jeremy is a great leader, say those who know him from his jiu-jitsu academy.

“Jeremy embodies the virtues that a martial artist and a great leader should embody,” the academy wrote a few days after the attack, adding that he was very skilled at earning his black belt and was always willing to teach those who did who needed help.

“Jeremy embodies the essence of our team. Given this challenging time, we hope to provide you with a means to extend your support.”
