Two people taken to hospital after accident on Cass Road

By Beth Milligan | June 23, 2024

Two residents were hospitalized early Saturday after a car collided with a power pole on Cass Road. Rescue efforts were hampered by downed power lines at the scene.

According to Michigan State Police, troopers responded to the crash on Cass Road north of Dendrinos Drive in Garfield Township at 12:15 a.m. Saturday. At the scene, a utility pole had broken in half, the vehicle was on its side, and the engine compartment was engulfed in flames. Troopers and deputies from the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office extinguished the fire and made contact with two occupants of the vehicle. The driver, a 28-year-old woman from Northport, responded to troopers, but the passenger, a 35-year-old man from Traverse City, was unresponsive.

Because the damaged pole and power lines were hanging about six feet above the roadway, troopers were unable to reach the occupants. They gave first aid instructions to the driver until the occupants could be extricated by the Traverse City Fire Department. The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the passenger was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

According to MSP, alcohol is believed to have played a role in the crash. The accident remains under investigation. Officers were assisted by the MSP Gaylord Post, Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office, Traverse City Police Department, Traverse City Fire Department and Mobile Medical Response.
