One dead, one injured as Gaston County declares a state of emergency

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. – A state of emergency was declared in Gaston County on Wednesday after severe weather struck the area, leaving one person dead, downing power lines and downing trees.

Gaston County Board of Commissioners Chairman Chad Brown signed the state of emergency Wednesday afternoon, according to a news release.

Two people were victims of a fallen tree that fell on a car. The New Hope Fire Department was called to rescue her.

One person was successfully rescued and transported to a local hospital. The second person was pronounced dead from the incident.

Officials said nearly 45% of Gaston County was without power as of 6 p.m. Wednesday.

“We are working as quickly as possible to ensure our residents are safe and fallen trees and debris are removed from the roads so energy crews can work to restore power,” Brown said.
