Former NY Times editor criticizes newspaper for ignoring “Squad” member and dismissing Hamas rape allegations as “propaganda”

Former New York Times opinion editor Adam Rubenstein reprimanded his former employer for failing to adequately report on the congressman’s controversial statements. Jamaal BowmanDN.Y., who said last year that allegations that Hamas raped women during the October 7 terrorist attacks were “propaganda.”

Bowman, a member of the far-left “Squad” who is facing a tough challenge in the New York 16th Congressional District primary, apologized this week for previously dismissing Hamas’ sexual violence against Israeli women. Rubenstein, an Israel supporter who has been critical of the “Gray Lady” since leaving office, turned to X to condemn Bowman and his “local newspaper.”

“Oops. Jamaal Bowman now admits he denied rape and apologizes,” Rubenstein wrote.

Former New York Times opinion editor Adam Rubenstein rebuked his former employer for insufficient coverage of controversial remarks made by Rep. Jamaal Bowman, DN.Y.

“He is the Todd Akin – and I have to assume that if he were a Republican who publicly and loudly denied rape, there would be clear accusations in the mainstream press,” Rubenstein added.

Akin sparked an outcry in 2012 when he said the female body had ways of preventing pregnancies that occurred during “legitimate rape.” He was running for the U.S. Senate in Missouri at the time, and the storm of outrage over his comments contributed to his defeat by Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill.

“Look at how many articles the Times published in a single day about Akin’s comments denying rape,” Rubenstein wrote alongside an image of Times search results showing that Akin’s comments were covered in seven different articles on August 20, 2012.

Rubenstein then attempted a similar search in Bowman’s comments.

“I have not found a single mention of Bowman’s comments denying rape in his local newspaper, the Times. His comments are from November 2023. It is June 2024 and his election is next week,” Rubenstein wrote as a caption to an image showing no results for Bowman’s comment.

The Times noted that Bowman had “expressed doubts that Hamas has committed sexual violence” in a June 3 article, which came months after his rhetoric first sparked strong reactions. The article not mention the “there’s still no evidence” quote that Rubenstein was looking for. Fox News Digital could not find any other mentions of Bowman’s comments in the Times archives.

The New York Times did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bowman called reports of the rape of Israeli women by Hamas terrorists “propaganda” during a rally with dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters in New York on Nov. 17. The remark came just days after lawmakers viewed a nearly 45-minute video of the tragic Oct. 7 terrorist attacks on Israel.

“Propaganda was used at the beginning of the siege,” Bowman said in a TikTok post discovered and published by Politico. “There is still no evidence of babies being beheaded or women being raped. But they are still using this lie for propaganda.”

Almost four years later, the New York Times is still haunted by Tom Cotton’s editorial

Bowman apologized for the comments, according to Politico. He now faces Westchester County Executive George Latimer in one of the most expensive House races. Area codes in US history. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, another far-left “Squad” member, has condemned AIPAC for spending millions to oust Bowman.

“An unspoken secret in Congress is that much of the knee-jerk, blind and unconditional support for nearly every action taken by the Israeli government is not based on actual approval. It is based on fear,” she wrote on X on Wednesday, saying lawmakers are afraid of AIPAC.
