Death of a student at Thacher School is under investigation

A death Monday night on the Thacher School campus outside Ojai is being investigated as a possible overdose, authorities said.

The incident was reported to dispatchers just before 10:15 p.m., Ventura County Sheriff’s Capt. James Sullivan said. School officials had reported that a student was in medical distress.

Sheriff’s deputies and paramedics arrived at the private school campus at 5025 Thacher Road, Sullivan said. The student was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s major crimes unit is investigating the death as a possible overdose, Sullivan said.

The 18-year-old male student was a Las Vegas resident, according to the Ventura County coroner’s office. The cause and manner of death were still pending as of Wednesday afternoon.

Thacher spokeswoman Carly Rodriguez emailed a statement from the school Wednesday afternoon.

“We are devastated by the loss of a valued member of our school community,” the statement said. “Out of respect for the privacy of the family as they grieve this unimaginable loss – and as we focus on supporting the safety and well-being of our students during this difficult time – we will have no further comment.”

The private boarding school in the Ojai Valley includes grades nine through twelve. There were approximately 257 students enrolled in the 2022/23 school year.

Motorcyclist injured in accident in Port Hueneme

A motorcyclist was seriously injured in an accident Monday afternoon in Port Hueneme, authorities said.

According to Port Hueneme police, the accident was reported around 12:20 p.m. near the intersection of Surfside Drive and Port Hueneme Avenue.

The motorcycle and a white van collided at the intersection, police said.

Officers found the driver on the ground with “serious” injuries, the department said in a news release. The male driver, whose age and place of residence were not disclosed, was taken to a hospital by ambulance. There was no information on his condition on Wednesday.

The van driver was not injured.

The crash is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Kim Mora at 805-986-6628.

Stabbing victim found in Somis area

According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, officers found a stabbing victim when they responded to a business in Somis Monday evening.

A 52-year-old man was at a nursery at 5595 Los Angeles Ave. was found stabbed, said Capt. Nick Odenath.

Odenath said authorities received a call about the stabbing at 8:40 p.m.
