Suspected car thief found dead after car crash in Box Elder County

BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — A man was found dead early Tuesday morning after crashing a car that had been reported stolen.

According to the Utah Department of Public SafetyOfficers at the Box Elder dispatch center received a call around 5:45 a.m. Tuesday morning. The caller reported a vehicle in a ditch near mile marker 20 on I-84.

“Further investigation revealed that the vehicle involved had been stolen from Weber County around midnight,” officials said.

The driver found at the scene of the accident matched the description of the suspect who allegedly stole the vehicle.

About 20 minutes after receiving the 911 call, police arrived at the scene and found a silver Toyota Sequoia “with significant damage” near Mile 18, according to DPS.

“The SUV had driven down an embankment and was not clearly visible from the road,” DPS said in a news release. “The driver was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and rollover.”

Officials said the driver was the only occupant of the vehicle and was pronounced dead.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. Police said officers are coordinating with the relevant authorities regarding the stolen car.

After the accident, lanes on I-84 were closed for about three hours.
