John F. Kennedy Jr. nearly killed his first serious girlfriend 13 years before his plane crashed, killing him and his wife, Carolyn Bessette, a new book reveals.

“Don’t Ask: The Kennedys and the Women Who Destroyed Them”by DailyMail.com columnist and author Maureen Callahan, JFK Jr. had a habit of putting others in danger.

“He had a death wish – not just for himself, but for the women in his life. In his teens and twenties, he had more near-misses than the public knew,” Callahan writes. “Speeding, swimming too far out to sea, driving recklessly on sidewalks or while under the influence of marijuana, skiing in white-out conditions.”

He also nearly “killed” his first serious girlfriend, Christina Haag, “more than once,” Callahan says.

But the couple soon found themselves “helpless” because the strong current pushed them towards a huge boulder. If a monster wave had not lifted them over it and brought them to safety at the last moment, they could have died.

After the crash landing on a remote beach, JFK Jr. “fell into a trance,” Callahan writes, adding that Christina later recalled that “death and being close to dying was a feeling of elation for him.”

Despite their refusal to get back in the kayak – and despite a group of local fishermen offering to take them to the mainland the next morning – John again insisted and said they would kayak back that same evening, Callahan revealed.

But on the return journey, conditions were even worse and the couple soon found themselves “15 feet under water.”

Years later, Christina reportedly still couldn’t remember how they survived.
