Former Richmond police officer sentenced to 15 years in prison for rape

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – A former Richmond police officer will begin serving a 15-year prison sentence in 2022 for raping a woman.

On Friday, a Richmond City District Court judge sentenced Jean Assad to 30 years in prison, 15 of which were suspended, after he was convicted of rape and aggravated sexual assault in March.

Assad was off duty and working as a security guard at the tobacco company when he drove a drunk 23-year-old woman to her home.

The victim spoke to 12 On Your Side after Assad’s conviction.

“It’s definitely not complete closure, but there is a sense of justice,” the victim said.

She says she took her case to court so other women wouldn’t have to go through this.

“I was definitely concerned that it would work because he’s a cop. They would definitely believe him because he’s a cop, but at the same time they have to believe it’s true,” the victim said.
