Former Miami charter school teacher arrested for alleged sexual conduct with student – ​​NBC 6 South Florida

A former teacher at a charter school in Miami was arrested several years ago for alleged sexual acts with a student.

Michael A. Tamayo, 39, was booked into a Miami-Dade jail on Thursday on charges that include sexual conduct with a child, lewd and lascivious molestation of a child and attempted sexual intercourse with a child, according to records.

According to an arrest warrant, Tamayo is a former teacher at Mater Academy East Charter School, where he taught social studies to grades 9 through 12 between 2012 and 2017.

In April, investigators learned that the alleged victim had undergone therapy and revealed in one session that Tamayo, her high school teacher at the school, had abused her when she was between the ages of 15 and 16.

The alleged victim said the relationship began when Tamayo was in charge of organizing a school trip to Italy. He became friends with the victim and started talking to her after school, the arrest warrant states.

She said he had behaved inappropriately toward her several times at school and tried to rape her there, the arrest warrant states.

Tamayo allegedly sent her inappropriate text messages and began touching her inappropriately while they were on a school trip to Italy, the arrest warrant states.

After she returned to Miami, the acts continued, with him touching her inappropriately when they were alone in his classroom, the arrest warrant states.

At one point, Tamayo managed to persuade her to meet him at a hotel, where he performed sexual acts on her, the arrest warrant states.

The alleged victim said she cut off contact with him after she got a boyfriend.

A review of records revealed that Tamayo was involved in another lewd and lascivious incident with another alleged victim, the arrest warrant states.

On Friday, it was announced in court that Tamayo was arrested in Virginia, where he currently lives, and extradited to Miami-Dade.

Tamayo’s defense attorney asked the judge to set bail because Tamayo had no prior convictions, but the judge ordered him remanded in custody without bail.
