Bridgeport police investigate explosion in residential building

BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut (WTNH) – Police are investigating an explosion early Thursday morning in Bridgeport.

According to police, officers and firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from a North Avenue apartment building around 12:27 a.m. When officers arrived on scene, they found damage that appeared to be the result of an explosion in the third-floor hallway.


Tenants have been evacuated from the building. The Connecticut State Police Bomb Disposal Squad and FBI bomb technicians are on site and working to clear the building.

So far, no injuries have been reported following the explosion.

North Avenue is closed between Oak Street and James until further notice.
