Accident: Fatal accident: Five killed in vehicle collision near Salem | News from Coimbatore

Salem: Five people, including a pregnant woman and two children, were on their way to a wedding on two motorcycles when their vehicles were crushed between a private bus and a truck at Achankuttapatty near Salem on Wednesday. Police identified the dead as Murugan, 32, of Dharmapuri district, his wife Nandhini, 29, and their son Madhan, 3, and L Vedavalli, 29, and her 10-month-old niece Jesika of Poovanur in Salem district. Murugan worked as a government surveyor in Krishnagiri district. Veeranam police inspector Sangeetha said P Lakshmanan, a 35-year-old construction worker, and his wife Vedhavalli, who was seven months pregnant, were on their way to a relative’s wedding in Salem on a motorcycle with Jesika. Murugan and his family were on their way to the same wedding on another motorcycle. Both were following a truck. When the truck slowed down to avoid a speed bump at Achankuttapatty, the motorcyclists also slowed down. However, the motorcycles were hit by a private bus coming from behind, trapping the motorcycles between the bus and the truck. Besides Lakshmanan, five other motorcyclists died on the spot, police said. Lakshmanan was taken to the government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital in Salem. The bodies were sent to the same hospital for postmortem. Police said the bus driver fled the accident spot. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway. An investigating officer said 13 passengers of the private bus sustained minor injuries and were admitted to SGMKMCH for treatment. Their condition is said to be stable. Prime Minister MK Stalin conveyed his condolences to the deceased and announced a compensation of Rs 200,000 to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured from the Prime Minister’s Public Relief Fund.
